Union/32 Quintet: Keith Kelly-tenor saxophone/flute, Adam Roberts-tenor & soprano saxophone, Brett Reed-vibraphone, Ben Hedquist-upright bass, Conor Sample-drums & cymbals
A kaleidoscopic view of the great record, taking the audience to unexplored aspects of the songs from “Revolver" – the 1966 classic Beatles recording. Highlights include: a drum-and-bass version of ‘Eleanor Rigby’, an avant-garde jazz version of ‘Yellow Submarine’; and a harmonically-dense ballad of ‘And Your Bird Can Sing’ reminiscent of the music Bill Evans.
Led by Dr. Brett Reed (vibraphone) Union/32 explores the rich musical traditions of various jazz composers and genres. For the past 10 years, Union/32 has brought great music to audiences around the Southwest. Whether playing the music of West Coast Jazz giants like Cal Tjader and Dave Brubeck, exploring Afro-Cuban jazz, or creating original jazz arrangements of the Beatles’ iconic Revolver record, Union 32’s presents vibrant and thrilling instrumental jazz music.
Union/32 is comprised of faculty members from Paradise Valley Community College and regularly includes Dr. Keith Kelly (saxophones, flute), Adam Roberts (saxophones), Jerry Rulon-Maxwell (guitar), Pam Morita (piano), Dr. Ben Hedquist (upright and electric bass), and Ryan Anthony (drums and cymbals).

Ten composers. Ten performers. Ten premieres.
Developed as a fresh, creative outlet for Phoenix jazz artists, the Nash Composers Coalition makes its debut with a complete program of original works. Spearheaded by Keith Kelly, Jeff Libman, and Russell Schmidt, the Nash Composers Coalition is guided by this principal: each performer should also contribute a new piece for the group to play.
While the ensemble’s personnel and size will change from event to event, the NCC’s goal will remain constant: to create a collective, collaborative musicmaking experience, where the players also share their compositional voices with one another. And those voices—as writers—are proving to be extremely diverse. So this won’t only be a unique opportunity for the ten composer/performers; it will also be a rewarding, new listening experience for our audience at The Nash.

Firecreek Coffee Company

11/Apr/2015 |8pm

Flagstaff, AZ US

Musicians from New York and Arizona combine forces for an epic night of experimental music at Firecreek Coffee Company - Flagstaff.

Jeff Young, on tour from Brooklyn, will perform a quirky selection of his own music for solo violin and live electronics under the heading Jeffrey Young's Magical Kingdom of Dust, including in-your-face theatrics, unabashed shredding, and oceanic soundscapes.

Straight outta Tempe, Static Announcements (saxophonist Keith Kelly, clarinetist Josh Bennett, and drummer Ryan Anthony) uses acoustic instruments and computer generated electronic sounds and effects to create freely improvised music.

Local favorite, The Ryan Stigmon Jazz Project will be joining the line up with Ryan Stigmon on tenor saxophone, Alec Graham on bass, Eric Anderson on drums and Jordan Butler on guitar.

Flagstaff native Joshua Hill, fresh from his band The Hill in Mind's album release in Phoenix the night before, will play some of his songs, then join in group improvisation along with fellow Phoenix-based flutist/vocalist Elizabeth Kennedy Bayer and violinist Megyn Neff…and then everyone else on the bill will join in! It’ll be a night of weirdness and wonder to remember.

Performing with THE UNFORTUNATES:
Following a thrilling debut at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and in advance of its production in San Francisco at ACT, be one of the first New Yorkers to experience a one hour concert version of the new musical “The Unfortunates."

The two hallmarks of the Bill Rauch era — audacious new works and a heightened emphasis on musicals — come together intriguingly in this bluesy, darkly comic romp, directed with infectious energy by Shana Cooper. A funky fever-dream of mortal fear and the longing for salvation, “The Unfortunates" takes its narrative DNA from the classic “St. James Infirmary Blues." The score emphasizes the common lineage of blues, early jazz, rock, soul and hip-hop. And the writing finds its strength in creating a pack of witty, colorful revelers amid a world collapsing into darkness. -Marty Hughley, The Oregonian

Pincushioned is: Barry Moon & Doug Nottingham
Since 2007 they have been working from a remote/suburban desert bunker melding digital sounds and images with their analog counterparts- beating drums, destroying guitars, spinning dials, sliding faders, writing software, building instruments and projecting bizarre imagery. These garbage-pickers of music and art exploit anything/everything: Jay Z, Xenakis or Rembrandt are no safer than Shostakovich, the Butthole Surfers or Bill Viola from their synthesizing/thieving hands. http://www.pincushioned.net/

Static Announcements is: Josh Bennett, Keith Kelly & Ryan Anthony
Based on the idea that free improvisation can exist with cohesion, care, and attention to harmonic texture and that acoustic instruments can be blended with electronic processing to create a new and exciting musical experience Static Announcements is constantly looking for what is to come. With backgrounds in Jazz, Rock, Classical, Avant-garde, and Pop each member brings their personal experience to the listener in a thoughtful way. http://staticannouncements.bandcamp.com/

The Union32 Jazz All-Stars (formerly the Faculty Jazz Ensemble of Paradise Valley Community College) will play their version of Miles Davis’ iconic Bitches Brew, bringing to life all the cuts from this seminal recording. An important record in the lexicon of jazz, Bitches Brew focuses on a rock-based, improvisational style of playing – as dependent on the creativity of the ensemble as the compositional materials.

The Union32 Jazz All-Stars are comprised of some of the most sought-after jazz performers and educators in the Valley: Keith Kelly-sax, Scott Zimmer-sax, Brett Reed-vibes, Ted Sistrunk-bass, Ryan Anthony-drums, and special guest Joe Garcia-percussion. In addition to this performance, the Union32 Jazz All-Stars have presented tribute concerts for Jazz in the Hills, Jazz in AZ, Scottsdale Arts Festival, and Sacred Grounds.

The event supports the Fine & Performing Arts Scholarship fund that benefits students in our award-winning Dance, Music, Performance, Creative Writing, Art, and Theatre Arts programs. Stockhausen emerged as a composer of singular voice in post WWII avant-garde musical movements. His work relied on a detailed approach to the use of electronics and pre-recorded tape and a sophisticated, and often conceptual, use of compositional methods and materials. His compositions range across a spectrum of styles and genres including everything from solo instrumental works, theatrical presentations and even a string quartet staged in multiple helicopters. Crossing 32nd Street Music Ensemble, CONDER/dance and a host of actors, painters, and sound artists will present his music and interdisciplinary works on the festival.

On Saturday, February 2nd at 7:30pm, the PVCC Faculty Jazz Ensemble will perform selections from John Coltrane's GIANT STEPS and A LOVE SUPREME.

John Coltrane is certainly in anybody’s top-five list of iconic performers; even simple photos of him exude the sounds of jazz. He is known for his skills as an improviser, composer, and bandleader coupled with an almost religious commitment to the music that he was making. In his career he championed be-bop and early modal styles, but also pushed jazz to the extremes of the avant-garde and modern music making. His legacy also includes working with some of the most important jazz artists of his time, such as Miles Davis, and serving as an influence himself for the musicians that have followed him.

The PVCC Faculty Jazz Ensemble is led by some of the most sought after jazz performers and educators in the valley. Keith Kelly (saxophone), Scott Zimmer (saxophone), Brett Reed (vibraphone), Ted Sistrunk (bass), and John Lewis (drums). Their ongoing series has paid tribute to Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Carla Bley, Chick Corea and many others. In addition to the tribute series, the Faculty Jazz Ensemble has appeared at Jazz in the Hills, Jazz in AZ, Scottsdale Arts Festival, and Sacred Grounds concert series.
